Intense Gales Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the region.

Intense gusts attaining speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 households without power and led authorities to call off in excess of 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the whole southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have released rare high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional electricity and network failures.

Widespread Destruction and Crisis Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting residences predominantly in the southern region, although agencies report that power was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, and trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been suspended because of the gusts, while certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Harsh Weather

These intense gusts on today come as many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the severe conditions has forced them to change certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, bringing a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have announced fire bans for fear of bushfires.
