The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
