Britain and America have secured a key bilateral deal that will ensure no tariffs on UK pharmaceutical products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to increase spending on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This move secures that import taxes on these vital goods will stay at zero for a period of three years.

This deal is in response to recent warnings to hike import taxes on patented drug products, with figures mentioned as high as 100%.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces much-needed balance to American-British medicine commerce," a release noted.

Trade Impact

Drugs constitute one of the Britain's most significant exports to the US, which is easily the biggest buyer for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period to the end of the third quarter, the UK exported drugs valued at billions to the US. This amount represented 17.4% of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee protects employment, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for life sciences," a government official remarked.

Key NHS Changes

The deal includes several key changes from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it deems new therapies to be prohibitively costly by twenty-five percent.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to raise total health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. Last year, repayments were more than 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement comes amid a ongoing row between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

This friction were heightened by arguments that American patients were charged several times more for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been directed toward US facilities.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
